First published in 1906, the poem ‘The Highwayman’ by Alfred Noyes tells the story of a highwayman who falls in love with an innkeeper’s daughter.


Poetry
----
'Wonder' is the story of Auggie, a boy born with a facial abnormality. The novel explores themes of empathy, friendship, acceptance and celebrating differences and is told from different perspectives. In the story, Auggie faces bullying and misunderstanding at school due to his appearance. However, other than his facial abnormality, he is a normal kid who enjoys spending time with his friends and family. He has been homeschooled for many years, but his mother feels he should start attending school with other children.

Year 2 marks the final year of key stage 1. As such, the DfE has outlined a number of goals for children to hit by the end of this important school year. Some of the goals relating to reading are as follows:
By the end of year 2, all children should be able to...
Read accurately by blending the sounds in words that contain the graphemes taught so far;
Read accurately words of two or more syllables that contain the same graphemes as above;
Read words containing common suffixes; and
Read further common exception words, noting unusual correspondences between spelling and sound.
